Chapter Thirteen
When Brad got back from the slope, he was physically and mentally exhausted. It was his first time down a black slope, and his first time to see a skiing accident. He felt both nervous and excited, and his body was still shaking as he got to his room. He turned on his laptop and checked his email. He had a message from his mum, who wrote a note to him every day, and a few messages from the football message board that he enjoyed reading. He also had the email heâd been waiting for from Ivan and Svetlana.
There were about twelve pages from the website, but they were mostly photographs showing the beautiful countryside in the Tatra Mountains. The English that Ivan or Svetlana had written was pretty good. Their main problem was with articles, like a, an, and the, that were used before nouns in English. For example, they wrote, We have steam bath where you can relax after day in mountains. Brad corrected it to, We have a steam bath where you can relax after a day in the mountains. The rooms looked very nice, all with their own bathrooms and great views of the mountains. This hotel was definitely better than the little hotel where he was staying.
In the Things to Do pages, there was information about dog sledding, helicopter flights, and target shooting. The description for target shooting said, Our team of guides will lead you through the forests and help you use our special high powered rifles to shoot special targets. Brad changed high powered to high-powered since it was a two-word adjective, but otherwise the sentence was fine.
Brad read more. At the age of seven, Brad had been a big fan of Rambo, the all-action hero played by Sylvester Stallone in the movies. Even now he quite liked the idea of crawling through the forests and shooting special targets. At his last school, the students had gone paintballing, and Brad was the only student not to get hit by one of the balls filled with paint.
It was on the very last page that Brad saw something strange. There was a typical menu from the restaurant in the hotel, with lots of wild pig and deer meat dishes, but what caught Bradâs eye was a photograph of the restaurant itself. In the corner of the restaurant was a family eating dinner and a waiter standing next to them pouring champagne. There was a man and a woman smiling at the waiter and a boy, clearly enjoying his plate of food. The boy had short blond hair. Although it was not the biggest photo in the world, it was clear that the boy in the photo was his Russian âfriendâ Andrej.
